The University of Insubria submits to the minister its “jewel”.

The big day of Insubria has arrived. On Thursday 18^th October, at 5 p.m., in Bizzozero will take place the opening ceremony of the new Insubria university college of Varese. As announced by the chancellor Renzo Dionigi, at the ribbon cutting ceremony will take part also the Minister of Education Francesco Profumo. That of the college, named "Carlo Cattaneo", is a deeply rooted dream: “This is a work tenaciously desired for and that the university was waiting for,” said Dionigi, “it is also quite an expensive intervention: we have invested over 10 million euros to realize it. The expenditure was financially supported thanks to the ministerial financing. I remember my numerous trips to Rome in order to carry out this ambitious project”. With the entering into operation of the structure, inside the university will be available 96 rooms, 6 one-room flats and 2 two-roomed flats, as well as the chancellor’s flat and the one of the keeper.

“The opening of the college will allow us to enlarge the attractiveness of our university. Moreover, it will be possible to plug a gap that until now wasn’t possible, that is the possibility to host some visiting professors and researchers coming from abroad. At the moment this already occurred but with more elevated costs”. In addition to the rooms the college has communal areas, a library, a music room, an auditorium, kitchens and also a gym.

“When we were conceiving this work, we were inspired by the historical colleges of Italian universities,” explained Professor Giancarlo De Luca, vice rector for the construction, “I owe a big part of my own education to my experience at Ghislieri College in Pavia. The college of Insubria University is not going to be just a dormitory, but a living space where students can grow and share their own life and study experiences. The idea is also that to reserve some rooms to the most deserving students, the ones who have a good average and are in line with their exams.”

“The details regarding the organization and criteria for choosing the students are still being defined,” clarified the elected rector Alberto Coen Porisini, “with the realization of this work we are ending an important match for Varese, whereas a similar matter regarding the base in Como is still open.”

Another aspect that still has to be defined is the administrative one: “We are studying several alternatives in order to find the person who will be in charge of the management,” explained the manager of the general Affairs area, Federico Raos, “the college is a ‘little gem and we want to make sure that it stays this way. Therefore I am assessing the different possibilities, such as direct administration or the commissioning to the Cidis consortium, which is the authority delegated to the interventions for the right to education.”
