Varese, the Army have better things to do
Following the “No” from the Prefect’s Office, the Democratic Party (PD) are asking the majority to vote on its motion now.

The army have better things to do. In Varese, the Carabinieri and the Police are sufficient to maintain law and order. This is the decision that came out of the discussion over security at the Prefect’s Office, a decision that seems predictable, all things considered. The idea stems from a motion, signed by 18 members of the town council, members of Lega Nord, Forza Italia, Movimento Libero and Movimento 5 Stelle, to have the Army intervene in Varese to maintain public order, following the serious events in Via Medaglie d’Oro.
“At this point,” said the leader of the PD group, Fabrizio Mirabelli, “as security is still a problem that is greatly felt by the people of Varese, and as we would hope the town council would give a united response to the serious events in Via Medaglie d’Oro, we invite Mayor Fontana to convince Councillor Nicoletti to withdraw the motion, signed by the centre-right majority, calling for the army to intervene, which is now useless, impracticable and late, so that all of the political forces can agree on the motion by the PD, which, on the matter of law and order, puts forward concrete solutions that are very similar to those shared by the Mayor himself at the provincial negotiations on security. Indeed, it would be incomprehensible to anyone with good sense if, in light of what emerged during the provincial negotiations on security, the centre-right majority continued to propose a solution that has proved to be unsustainable.”
“We are appealing particularly to the more responsible members of the centre-right majority, who have already expressed more than one doubt over the need to ask the Army to intervene,” Mirabelli concluded, “so that the image of Varese is not damaged, just a few days before the beginning of Expo 2015, as a result of unfounded, irresponsible alarmism over a delicate topic like security.”
